Gas Furnaces Need Derating
Thinner air at altitude means less oxygen for burn. Gas furnaces must be derated. The rate is about four percent per 1,000 feet above sea level. This needs a high-altitude orifice kit and a proper burn air check.
Guide
HVAC at 6,000 to 7,000 feet is not the same as a Sacramento job. Burn derating, cold-climate ratings, and snow load all change the spec.

South Lake Tahoe sits at about 6,250 feet. Truckee sits at around 5,800 feet. At those heights, gas furnaces produce less heat per BTU. Heat pumps face thinner air. Line sets must be routed above snow lines. Fresh Air is one of the few Sacramento-area contractors that works often at Tahoe altitude.

Standard heat pumps lose capacity below 30 degrees. At Tahoe, winter lows drop below 10 degrees often. Cold-climate heat pumps with variable-speed compressors keep heating output at those temps.
Outdoor condenser and line set placement must account for snow depths that can exceed several feet. Gear placed too low can be buried, blocked, or damaged before spring.
A Sacramento contractor using standard furnace specs at Tahoe altitude will set up a unit that falls short in winter. Gas units that are not derated run rich. They build carbon deposits. They can put out excess CO. Cold-climate heat pump specs need the local design heating temp. At Truckee that can be zero degrees or lower.
Fresh Air has set up and replaced units in South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Tahoe City, Kings Beach, and Incline Village. We use altitude-corrected Manual J calcs for every Tahoe job. We carry the gear specs to do the work right. CSLB license 945361, insured, in business since 2009.
No. Standard heat pumps lose output fast below freezing. A cold-climate inverter heat pump rated for sub-zero use is the right pick for Tahoe winter temps.
Yes, or the same furnace needs a high-altitude kit. The burn air-to-fuel ratio must be adjusted for thinner air. If it is not, the furnace will run poorly and may produce excess carbon monoxide.
